Scientist in the Shadows
: NEAT. week’s Monday night YA play is Norman King’s drama, The Shadow of Doubt. It bears some inter-
esting parallels to the notable Klaus Fuchs case, and tells the story of a brilliant English scientist who has been imprisoned for divulging secret information about a discovery he has made, In the north of England he begins again with a new name, but the press get hold of the information and reveal his identity. After this, he is warned by M.1L5 that an attempt will be made to secure his services for a foréign Power. This does not at first seem to connect with an offer he receives to engage in research for a private firm, but those people who know their John Buchan and his spiritual heirs, will recognise the formula, secret or not. The Shadow of Doubt was produced in the Auckland studios of the NZBS by Earle Rowell, Arthur, the scientist, is played by John Huson; and Laura, his wife, by Laurel Mather. Miss Mather is a well-known Australian radio actress, and is at present touring New Zealand with The Boy Friend company. Richard Meikle, who plays Frank, is also from the same company. Other roles are played by Laurence Hepworth (Manning), Winsome Wallis (Gladys), and T. E. Dowling (Hughie).
