FOR SHUTTER-BUGS
N a recent BBC programme Alfred Hitchcock, the film director, joyfully told how he had the immaculate profile of Ivor Novello photographed with a flower-pot .seemingly poised above it. What Hitchcock did in a spirit of devilment, ordinary camera enthusiasts unfortunately do too often, without the least intention. For these amateurs (in every sense of the world) of the camera, William Docherty has recorded six talks which he calls Introduction to a Camera.
These will be heard first in 3YA’s Women’s Session, beginning on Thursday, May 10, and later from other YA and YZ stations. Mr. Docherty tracks down the causes one by one why that gorgeous shot of the girl-friend enhancing the landscape turned out the ruin of a beautiful friendship. It’s not necessary for a good photographer to haye a vast amount of expensive professional equipment. The chromium on cameras, like that on cars, costs a lot and achieves nothing. What
is essential is that the photographer should understand the limitations of his camera and how, with the aid of simple devices like filters and reflectors, properly understood, satisfying pictures can be the rule rather than the exception. Mr. Docherty explains the mysteries and practical use of exposure meters, and aperture and speed regulation. He also discusses the difficulties and delights of colour photography, portraiture and pictorial composition.
