The Fortunes of Nigel
T was in 1603, as every Scotsman knows, that the crowns of Scotland and England were united, when James VI of Scotland became James IF of Great Britain and Ireland. Whatever may have been the merits and defects of James, "wisest fool in Christendom," Sir Walter Scott gives a massive full length port-
rait of him in his famous book, The Fortunes of Nigel, which tells the story of a young Scots nobleman at the London Court/ As the BBC adaptor said, "One could no more put the whole of Nigel into a radio serial than one could
pour the Mediterranean into the crater of Vesuvius." Nevertheless, lovers of Scott who listen to Nigel when it starts as a serial from the YAs and YZs on Sunday, April 8, won’t find the spirit of the book impaired. Bryden Murdoch plays Nigel and Duncan Macrae James I. Production is by Finlay J. MacDonald.
