LIGHT MUSIC
Sir,-"A.E.H." is completely unaware of what jazz is, to judge from his facile polysyllabic conglomeration of nouns and adjectives. The basic jazz_ band consists of (a) New Orleans: trumpet, clarinet. trombone, tuba, side drum and bass drum; (b) Chicago: trumpet,’ clarinet, trombone, string bass, piano, banjo and drums. These instruments are played by persons who know each other extremely well. The band adopts a basic tune and then each instrument takes its turn to improvise on the theme-the whole blending together in much the same way as a classical concerto. A major difference is the improvisation-if music is written the result is not: jazz. In addition the instruments generally have a vocal tonal quality, as opposed to the "pure" tone of the symphony orchestra. The horror that concerns "A.E.H." is swing and its offshoots-a horrible debasement of jazz. I would suggest that a little research into jazz and its deviations might bear unexpected fruit, and at least some comprehension of the
