SPOTLIGHT ON NATO
‘THE North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was created on April 4, 1949, in an atmosphere of fear born of defencelessness. It now consists of fourteen sovereign States: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy,. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the. United Kingdom, the United States-all original signatories to the treaty-and Greece’ and Turkey, which joined it in 1952. The BBC has written a feature programme about NATO called The Defence of the West This will be broadcast in ZB Sunday Showcase at 9.35 p-m. on Sunday, February 13. A team
of BBC reporters made on-the-spot investigations of the various commands which are the operational _ military agents of NATO. There are reports from the supply lines of the North Atlantic Allies--from the Atlantic coast to a Canadian Fighter station in Germany. René Cutforth covers the Norwegian Front and the Northern Command; Maurice Brown describes the work of Allied minesweepers in the North Sea; while Alan Burgess is with the Allied Second Tactical Air Force and the Ist US. Infantry Division in Germany. French and German attitudes to the European Defence Community and the re-arma-ment of Western Germany are discussed and finally David Woodward deals with the Allied Navies in the Mediterranean. | Detence of the West is edited by | David Woodward.
