HOBSON'S CHOICE
(London Films) ‘THE obvious thing to say about Hobson’s Choice is that it’s a vehicle for a terrific old ham named Charles Laughton, as Hobson. It is, too, and while I’m no Laughton fan I must say I much enjoyed this particular romp. More touching and, in a way, effective, on the other hand, are Brenda de Banzie and John Mills, as the Hobson daughter who got tired of living on the shelf and the man she decided to marry and turned into Hobson’s business rival. Their story isn’t the sort that really excites me, but this film quite won me over, largely, I think, because of the style and poetry given it by the direction of David Lean and the photography of Jack Hildyard (who, by the way, also photographed The Heart of the Matter). The whole thing has been done with much imagination and loving care, and I liked it veiy much.
