ISsued By ThE NEW ZEALAND DEPT 0f HEALTK '8 Ole Teite I5 TOuch the TETANUS (or Lock Jaw) BACILLUS is tough; and it packs a deadly punch: It loves to get into a deep wound, such as that inflicted by nails, splinters, firearms and garden forks Or a wound sealed off by pus, dirt and plaster dressing: It loves moisture and absence of oxygen_ Doctors know the danger of tetanus poisoning: They guard against possible danger by giving antitetanic serum to all accident victims, and whenever they encounter deep and dirty wounds: Tetanus is not easy to cure, and on an average every second victim dies; but it is readily prevented: No New Zealander should contract it, because immunisation confers protection against tetanus; in the same way as diphtheria antitoxin protects against diphtheria. Two injections in childhood and a booster dose a year later will build up protection. If a suspicious injury does occur then all that iS necessary 1S 3 booster dose, instead of the large injections of anti- serum now required. Immunisation, properly boosted, gives permanent safety. talk it over with your doctor:
