MATURED ART
Sir,-As the proud possessor of the stone sculptured figure which graced the cover of your issue of September 10 I would like to reply to those correspondents who lack understanding of such a fine work of art. This figure emanates great strength and has a simplicity and balance of line which is fate in sculpture. The artist is not a copyist,.but has made use of the human figure as a medium for his own expression. What one derives from a work of art depends not on the work of art alone but also on the mind of the beholder, and this is where the "crudeness and the indecency" must originate for some of Russell Clark’s critics. Some people in this country have a sickly sentimentality of attitude towards painting and sculp-ture-they do not want art to be progressive and vital-an expression of the times in which we live. The work of Russell Clark is sincere _and honest and deeply appreciated by those who have eves to see.
