Meeting the Cassons

‘THE visit of Dame Sybil Thorndike and Sir Lewis Casson to Auckland has not only revived memories of a remarkable theatrical season of 20 years ago, but has given us renewed contact with the dramatic tradition of a former age when rich and round speaking held sway in place of naturalistic mumbling. Radio interviews with Sir Lewis and

Vame Sybil gave us some idea of the Teasons why, at an age when "the average New Zealander has been long supported by a paternalistic government, the Cassons are still working at full pressure. Sir Lewis, interviewed by Donald McGregor, revealed a passion for the theatre and a high sense of the actor’s responsibility as well as a conviction that the importance of speech was again being recognised. Dame Sybil, interviewed by Cynthia Dale, was a flurry of energy and enthusiasm, with a dash of Aunt Daisy’s breathless inconsequence, as excited by the future as a young actress beginning her career, full of sound sense and shrewd commenta really delightful personality giving one of the best interviews of the year. It takes two to make a good interview, however; and had not the Cassons been asked the right questions at the right time, neither session would have been

as good value as it was.
