NO RETURN FOR TAX-COLLECTOR
\WHEN white men settled in Fiji one of the more barbarous customs they introduced was that of taxation. The natives failed to see its usefulness, and at first refused. to swallow it. This attitude, however, did not extend to the tax collector. He became the unwilling first course .at Fiji's last cannibal feast. The story of this final "long-pig" dinner was told to the NZBS broadcaster
Bryan O’Brien by a planter who witnessed the event in his youth. Mr. O’Brien recorded the conversation and has included it in a series of programmes entitled Fiji Cruise, which start from all ZB stations at 9.32 p.m. on Friday, September 3. Travelling throughout the Fiji group in H.M.N.Z. Tui, Mr. O’Brien picked up plenty of picturesque material. His programmes range from an account of events leading up to the capture of Felix von Luckner to stories of Levuka’s> button industry and Savu Savu’s unusual hot springs.
