LOKI'S DAUGHTER'S PALACE
Hel, daughter of Loki, goddess of death for all who did not die in battle, dwelt in Helheim. Her palace was Anguish, and her table Famine. She had two waiters, Slowness and Delay, and her threshold was called Precipice. The bed in that palace was Care. PRECIPITOUS the threshold Of Loki’s daughter’s palace, sheer Falling as empty talk down years. Above the gates of Helheim "Anguish" it said in clear Runes carved cold as fear. The straw-dead comers pressed _ Through dark doors gaping wide. Hel, daughter of Loki, would examine Each slow-approaching guest. Inside ‘Was trat-squeak music, telling Only one feasting-Famine. Shield-like the plates went clattering In vaulted dark, long echoing. Two waiters, Slowness and Delay, Dished up cold nothingness At the drab close of day Garnished with raftered air. And so to bed. © And the bed’s name was Care. — Dark lady of that darkened land,
Take my landlady by the hand.
