HE LOVES HORSES
THE WEEK-END BOOK of New Zealand Horses and People, by O. N. Gillespie (‘‘The rr whe illustrated: published by the author, /6. ‘THIS cheerful book is something more than a week-end book; for the people for "whom it has been written-the people who love horses and horse-racing -it will no doubt be an authority to refer to time and again. And if the people for whom it was written are as cheerful and lively as the author they must be a very cheerful company indeed; it is safe to say that they will be even more so after reading this book: Mr. Gillespie knows a_ great deal about the thoroughbred industry in New Zealand, and he devotes most of his space to the horse as racehorse. But he also writes about hunting and hacking and pony clubs, and the last section is about the Queen’s visit to races, studs and shows in this country. There are many photographs of racecourses, horses, people and ponies; and a whole chapter of horse chestnuts and some advice about betting. I am sure
Mr. Gillespie’s readers, the ones for whom the book was written, will hope that he will soon find time to assemble, as he has promised, "the army of recollections that marches, or saunters," about in his head. The recollections are so much more widely enjoyed sauntering about in a book like this one.
