On my questioning the selection of the sacred seven, this woman shrilled, "All right! When was the last immortal dead?"
SURROUNDED by them, I wished stupid women wouldn’t concentrate so hard on looking interesting. SERIOUS danger in solid books like Churchill’s The Second World War is that they are too heavy to read in bed. A heavy book falling on an upturned face could easily fracture the nose. APVERTISEMENT writers take themselves seriously. You might almost think it was somehow a laudable sort of business. It was therefore a joy to read something. so equivocal as "Watch father smile when you hand him a gift from a N 18th Century portraits the wigs are careful, but the eyes bemused and the expressions vacuous. Yet we know that many of the sitters were not as half-witted as they look, not by half. I have a theory that they were simply bored by sittings, and taking so much snuff that they were always but not quite about to sneeze. HAT a simple Victorian pleasure it gave me to notice a frock shop sub-. titled "The House of Apparel Arts for Ladies and their Daughters." Z
