"BEGINNERS, ACT 1!"
"1TF-Repertory brings me in a profit of X pounds a week, all right; I'll run rep.," said the theatre manager. "But if performing sea-lions give me X plus one pounds a week, right; they’re in and rep.’s out, It’s as simple as that." This not uncommon attitude to culture sets the tone of a new NZBS comedy to be broadcast in the ZB Sunday Showcase on July 11. Entitled Be-
ginners, Act One! the play follows the fortunes of a group of out-of-work West | End actors trying to establish a live theatre in the city and Royal Borough of Dunhambury. This provincial town has textile, boot and metal drainingboard industries, five \cinemas, and 40,000 people who regard performing sea-lions as the summit of theatrical art. They are proud of their new "legitimate" theatre, but would not at any price attend. Written by Anthony Buckeridge, Beginners, Act One! was produced at Wellington by Norman Griffiths (above), with Alan Rowe as Peter Madders, William Austin as Steven Bridges, and Bernadette Camty as Sheila Barratt. It will be heard from all ZB stations at 9.35 p.m. on Sunday, July 11. -_ a nee nr ne mene
