The Old Curiosity Shop
"THE BBC’s radio version of The Old Curiosity Shop, which was heard last | year from 3YC, will be broadcast in the . next three weeks from 2YC on Satur- | day nights at 10.0 p.m. The adaptation | (in three parts) is by Mabel Constan- | duros, and Little Nell is played by Jan- | -ette Scott, the 13-year-old film actress who began her film career at the age of two, -but is here playing her first dramatic role on the air. Other players who take part are John Byron as Dick Swiveller, John Moffat as Daniel Quilp, Sarah Leigh as Mrs. Clapper, Susan Richards as Mrs. Jiniwin, Courtney Hope as Mrs. Nubbles, Heron Carvic as Sampson Brass, Stanley Beard as Fred Trent, Trader Faulkner as Kit, and Martin Lewis as Grandfather. The part of Dickens is taken by Arthur Ridley. _ The broadcast of the production in ' England was well received, and Maurice Gorham, writing in’ the London Star after he had heard the first instalment, said: "It is no easy job to reduce a Dickens novel to three one-hour instalments without depending heavily on a narrator, but this first programme seemed to me likely to succeed equally with those who know the book and those -who don’t. The Old Curiosity Shop will begin from 2YC at 9,59 p.m. on July 3. /
