World Theatre "Tempest"
INE of the BBC’s most successful World Theatre adaptations, The Tempest, with Norman Shelley in the role of Prospero, will be repeated from 3YC at 9.0 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30. The play is produced by Raymond Raikes, and the btoadcast. will be preceded at 8.10 p.m. by a six-minute introductory talk by Sarah Campion. In this World Theatre version of The Tempest, which was first broadcast here in 1952, Raymond Raikes has introduced two departures from tradition. He adopts the theory that the storm does not end until Prospero discards his authority and "adjures his rough magic," so that in the broadcast the sense of tempest is all-pervading. His other change is in the interpretation of the character of Prospero, who is often represented as an unsympathetic, prosy pedant. Raikes feels it is possible to see him ag a man who has lived richly and is aware of the temptations which beset hig fellows. The broadcast lasts for just under two hours, Besides Nortnan Shelley in the leading role there is Louise Hutton as Miranda and John Glen as Ferdinand.
