Ideas for Canterbury

""ANTERBURY CRYSTAL, a 3YA * series of talks by L. C. Walker, is the most interesting thing of its kind that I have heard. Mr. Walker, an idealist with a practical turn of mind, who would like to see us plant several small immigrant-supplied towns in the province, has told us of a hundred and one developments in applied science of which most of us.are ignorant. We have heard of the "revolutionary gas turbine," a machine which is more economical than the petrol engine; of a pump that can move water at a greater rate, and of the barge factories of England’s waterways which dry grass quickly to preserve its food value. It came as a surprise, so conditioned are we by the thought that everything new is better than old methods, to learn that Mr Walker considers that canals would provide a cheaper means of.transport. Jt is strange, if these things are as feasible as they sound, that Mr, Walker’s ideas have not been thoroughly investigated by Canterbury’s public-spirited men.
