DYLAN THOMAS
Sir-I listened to the 1YC _ programme (February 1), "Tribute to Dylan Thomas." I was increasingly irritated by the dry and almost schoolroom attitude adopted by the speakers. Why can’t’ dead writers be left alone? Why ae rane Se |
can’t we be left to read them (or have them read to us) without all the pedantic. and sterile conceptions of success being batted about? Happily Denis Glover did give us an honest and credible description of the man as he found him. Not an outsized scarecrow filled with straw. Let us be honest with ourselves. Thomas was a man ripe with all the rich thoughts of a fertile lifetime. A man with an enormous lust for lifewho drank too much gin. A man who did not want to be other than he was. Might-we not just leave him that way--as a great and natural poet-and a human being?
