INTO SPACE, by P. E. Cleater; Allen and Unwin, English price 15/-. Fs [HIS is another book on the fashion_able subject of rockets and the possibility of interplanetary travel. It differs from another one reviewed recently in these columns in that although it covers very similar ground it is somewhat wider in aspect. While full appreciation of the contents of at least two chapters requires a knowledge of physics well above the average, at the other end of the scale some of the remarks and sketches are most amusing. It might be said that Mr. Cleater rather overworks. the lack of foresight of the authorities in recognising the value of rocket research, but it was in all probability just this factor which gave the Germans such a tremendous lead in this field, Into Space contains one of the most convincing ‘arguments for continuing (continued on next page)

The author makes the case that if this work is to be pursued on a national basis, then the power first to establish a base on the moon will gain control of the universe. On the other hand, as the passage of every day leaves the earth with 70,000 additional mouths to feed, it is only a matter of time before man must decide between finding some way of voluntarily reducing the population and finding somewhere else to accom-
modate the overflow.
