Trollope Condensed
OTTED ‘Trollope? Certainly, I say, having just heard the NZBS version of The Warden, Trollope any way, in fact, remembering with gratitude the BBC seria] versions of Barchester Towers and The Last Chronicle of Barset. I thought the NZBS ‘production compared very favourably with the BBC, indeed, I thought Briton Chadwick’s Archdeacon Grantley quite outstanding, and I thoroughly relished the fresh breath of worldliness he brought to the Cathedral Close (in the novel I cannot remember the Archdeacon having quite this gift of repartee). My only criticism of the production is of the over-careful framing of The Warden as a period piece, My impression after hearing it was of the complete validity in any historical period of the issues involved: To apologise for it suggests the heresy that in times of political insecurity scruples are quaint survivals of a
more leisured age.
