ON HEARING OF DYLAN THOMAS'S DEATH
A ND what did he mean to me, To the distant reader? Sensual lips and a round-eyed stare, Concord from contusion, a tousle of hair, The babe of fire by his pyre of fear, And a sight so clear we could see, But what might he mean to be For the deadened reader? The air’s sweep through a summney day, That glad girl in the yellow hay, The loafer whittling the times away, And a skiff on a mirror sea. So how did it sound to be free To the imprisoned reader? Like towers of words swept round in the sky _ High towns of toys in a birthday eye, A drunken song and a woman’s cry, And the singer hung from the tree, © Then what did he come to see With his world of readers? That babes of fire see babes of fire . London burning in evil and ire, That peace is age and a burnt-out star, And the child has but small time to be. "5
