HOW TO LISTEN TO THE AIR RACE...
‘THE background to the Air Race and news of race preparations will be broadcast in "Air Race Special," a newsreel-type programme Scheduled for all YA and YZ stations at 7.0 p.m. cach evening from Monday, October 5, to Friday, Ocfober 9. This feature will include material sent back by Ulric Williams, the NZBS officer aboard the New Zealand race entry, the R.N.Z.A.F. Hastings, and the last edition of "Air Race Special" will include some progress results. The map printed here has been designed to help listeners follow the race bulletins. Each square pn it is numbered for quick reference, and these numbers will be used by announcers when giving the reported positions of the planes. Details of the NZBS cover of the race appear below.
NATIONAL STATIONS Friday, October 9; 6.9, 7.18 and 8.9 a.m. (opprox.): Start of race end a aoe report; all YAs and YZs. 3 a.m.: Progress report; all YAs and YZs. 10. 0 a.m., 11.0 a.m. and. noon: Progress reports; 3YA and 2YA (repeated by other YA end YZ stations at convenient intervals). 12.33 p.m.: Race summary; all YAs and YZs. 1.0 p.m.: Progress report; 3YA and 2YA (other YA and YZ stations at convenient intervals). 2.0 p.m.: Progress report; all YAs and YZs. 3. 0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 p.m.: Progress reports; 3YA and 2YA (other YA and YZ stations at convenient intervals). 7.0 p.m.: "Air Race Special"; all YAs and YZs. 8.0, 9.3 and 10.0 p.m.: Progress reports; all Fy and YZs. 10.30 p.m. to 6.0 a.m. Saturday: Progress reports haurly on the hour; 3YA, 2YA and 3YZ. The all-night programme, consisting of music and BBC and NZBS programmes connected with aviation, mey be interrupted at any time to give important news or to cover the orrivol of aircraft in the speed section.
Saturday, October 10: 6.0 to 9.0 a.m.: All YA stations and 4YZ will broadcast a common breakfast programme, giving race news as it comes to hand. 6.9, 7.18, 8.9 and 9.3 a.m. (approx.): Race news bulletins; all YAs and YZs. 10.0 and 11.0 a.m.: Race news bulletins; 3YA and 2YA (other YA and YZ stations at convenient intervals). 12.33 p.m.: Race summary; all YAs and YZs. Saturday eceedniss 3YA will broadcast arrival of any late-finishing dircraft in speed section. Any important progress reports will be broadcast by YA and YZ stations at convenient intervals in their programmes. 6.28 and 9.3 p.m. (approx.): Progress reportof handicap section; all YAs and YZs. 11.13 p.m.: Progress report: All YAs. The first handicap plane is expected about midnight. Stations 3YA and 2YA will remain on the air to cover the arrival of the first two or three aircraft in the handicap section after which they will close down. Sunday, October 11: 8.9 and 9.3 a.m. (approx.): Race results and recorded coverage of arrivals during night; all YA and YZ stations.
12.33, 6.28 and 9.3 p.m. (opprox.): Sum- | : moaries of results of race as a whole; all YA ) and YZ stations. | COMMERCIAL STATIONS Friday, October 9: At intervals throughout the day all ZB stations and 2ZA will broadcast progress reports. 7.0 p.m.: The Quiz Kids’ programme will consist of questions related to the air race and to aeronautical subjects generally. The final» few minutes of the show will be given over | to a race report from Christchurch by Selwyn | Toogood. 10.30 p.m. to 6.0 a.m. Saturday: All ZB stations will broadcast progress reports hourly on the hour and will interrupt their programmes at other times to give important news bulletins or to cover the arrival: of competing planes. The all-night programme, which will be compered by Selwyn Toogvod from Christchurch, will feature reports on activities connected with the race: meteorological services, navigational aids, catering and the like.
