GOOD COMPANION
MEMORIES, by Desmond MacCarthy; Macgibbon and Keé. English price, 16/.. ‘THs volume, with a foreword by Raymond Mortimer and a pen portrait by Cyril Connolly, I found delightful Teading on an ocean voyage, for it enabled me to exchange the company and conversation of sheep-farmers, disappointed immigrants, sad business men (hopeful or successful in our small Now Zealand way) for the society of the charming Irish critic and the numerous literary friends he introduces with so much learning and good humour. As
well as a score of essays on writers, most of them well known personally to MacCarthy, there are essays on other people as diverse as Roger Fry and Pet Marjory, and some reminiscences, among the more interésting being those of Eton
ana Cambridge.
