Morgan and Moore
S the BBC programme from 3YC marking the centenary of George Moore’s birth progressed [I thought, "This is good, extraordinarily’ good," and authenticated point by point with sentences and paragraphs taken from the novels. It explains to me why I thought Esther Waters a good novel, yet couldn’t abide the Confessions of a Young Man, Not only did the script leave Moore his greatness, but better still, it showed his greatness as a reflection of the man in a way Moore himself could not, for the bumptious Moore of the Confessions bears little relation to, the great author of Esther, Further, this was a talk which should be of benefit to anyone concerned with the problem of novealwriting. Had I registered the fact that Charles Morgan was speaking, I would not have been so surprised at the ex-
cellence of the talk.
