Attention All DX-ers!

AUSTRALIA'S smallest radio station, 5AL Alice Springs, South Australia, operating on 1530 kilocycles, will broadcast a special programme for New Zealand listeners, on Sunday morning, August 23, 1953, from 2.30 to 3.0 a.m. -N.Z. Time, The programme will consist of recordings with station identification each three minutes. Station 5AL began operations in early 1949, and was seldom heard in New Zealand due to interference from American stations on the frequency. In 1952 -a new 200-watt transmitter, SLN at Port. Lincoln, South Australia, was synchronised with 5AL, so that listeners could hear only one programme, and the signal would be that of the more powerful station. The ABC has kindly agreed to operate 5AL only for 30 minutes after the station’s normal sign-off at 2.30 a.m. N.Z.T. on August 23 so that. listeners can hear this low-powered transmitter, and the ABC get some idea of the coverage throughout Australasia of this area’s lowest-powered station. The programme is being dedicated to members of the New Zealand Radio DX League.
