Keeping Up With the Horses
"HE vehicle shown below is neither a hearse nor a fire ambulance, but one of the BBC’s utility vehicles, and the moustachioed face framed in the glasssided turret on top belongs to Raymond Glendenning. The turret was designed by the Corporation for use in commentaries where a clear view over the heads of the crowd is desired. The new vehicle, smooth running and comparatively silent, is particulafly useful for such broadcasts as, the commentary on the Lincoln Handicap, where the road runs alongside the race track. and the
car can be driven along at the horses’ pace with the commentator busily commenting from his almost sound-proof turret. The same sort of car can also be used for commentaries on cycle races and for many occasions when an_ uninterrupted view is necessary. Glendenning, who has been broadcasting in one way or another for the last 21 years, is one of the best-known of all BBC sports commentators, and is equally at home with racing, football, snooker, boxing, darts and possibly shove-halfpenny. His big asset is an astonishing memory.
