Long, Long Ago
"ON Monday night the Governor's effigy after being paraded through the town, carried by three Maoris, was burnt in a large bonfire, and other unequivocal demonstrations have been given of the joy the settlers feel on having been relieved of Captain Fitzroy’s rule." This extract from an early New Zealand newspaper illustrates the theme of a series of broadcasts scheduled to start in the Women’s Programme from 2ZA and 1XH on Tuesday, August 11, and later from the ZB stations. Entitled This Wasn’t History, the series consists of extracts from early papers, which, for one reason or another, did not usually find their way into the history books. Considering the early New Zealand journalist’s capacity ‘for cutting comment, this is perhaps not surprising. The programmes were culled from the General. Assembly Library’s newspaper files by Prudence Gregory.
