At that rate, we shouldn’t have long to wait now for a duly authorised Hollywood version of the Bible. Then, I have no doubt, there will be treacle in Gilead with a. vengeance; and there will be lots more that you won’t find in the King James version. You will learn (if the current instalment can be relied on) that Salome was sent to Rome to escape the attentions of her stepfather, and later. sent back to Judea by Caesar (in the interests of the Romans); and that she was a well-intentioned. young woman whose notorious dance was intended to divert attention from an attempted rescue of John the Baptist not to procure his execution. Along with Rita Hayworth and Stewart Granger in this unholy mélange of sentimentality, sex, and pseudo-sanc-tity. are such once eminent names as Cedric Hardwicke, Charles Laughton, Judith Anderson and Basil Sydney. But there’s nothing they can do to save the day. It’s another victory for the Philistines.
