Second Link With "Irmelin"
N_ addition to Edna Graham, the Christchurch soprano who took thetitle role in Sir Thomas Beecham’s presentation of the Delius opera Irmelin at the New Theatre, Oxford, last month. another New Zealander was connected with the performance. Doris Veale. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. O. Veale. of New Plymouth, was chorusmaster. Miss Veale first gained prominence when, as a 15-year-old pupil of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, she won the scholarship of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music with record marks in the _ licentiate diploma examination in pianoforte. There followed a New Zealand Government bursary for study overseas, where she studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. A successful career as a student at od Academy culminated in an appointment | as sub-professor. From then on Miss. Veale specialised in piano accompaniment, and last year she was appointed accompanist to the London Philharmonic Choir, She has accompanied numerous artists in BBC programmes, and _ has made four solo appearances. Accepted by the Arts Council, she has played at many music club recitals throughout | Britain. Miss Veale is to visit New Zealand | next summer. She is scheduled to leave London in the Rangitoto on October 30 and is due at Auc: ‘and early in December. Her three months’ visit, the first she will have made since she went. abroad in 1946, is primarily for a holiday and to see her parents. Nevertheless, it is. likely that she will give a pianoforte recital in New Plymouth and play a concerto with the New Plymouth Orchestra under the direction of Wil-
