Harpoons and Hardtack

_:XCITING tales of whaling before and during the First World War are told in Harpoons and Hardtack, a series of eight talks by John Jackson, which will start from 3YC at 10.0 p.m. on Monday, July 6. Though some listeners will have heard these tales when they were broadcast in a slightly longer form a few years ago, they are of the kind that easily stand a second hearing. The son of an old whaling family, John Jackson starts his story in 1907 with a trip to Campbell Island, where he helped with the shearing as well as engaging in whaling. In later talks he tells of adventures in Tory Channel ard off ‘the Kaikoura coast.
