GRAND JUSTICIAR

HUBERT de BURGH, A Study in Constancy, by Clarence Ellis; Phoenix House. English price, 25/-. [UBERT DE BURGH was his own ancestor. From modest beginnings he became Grand Justiciar to King John. At one time he owned so many castles and estates throughout England and Wales that when dotted on a map they look like plums in a rich pudding. How he rose to this great position and many possessions is outlined inthis book, which is written for the educated reader with an intelligent interest in history. It must be agreed however that most readers, educated or otherwise, know little of Hubert’s life. Mr. Ellis is an historian who has given a lifetime of

research to this period and who documents his work, thoroughly. If there is disagreement’ with Him at least one can find his sources and the reasons for his opinions. I said Hubert de Burgh was his own ancestor. His posterity includes some of the greatest names of mediaeval England. And while on that subject it is interesting to note that his brother William married the daughter of Donal More O’Brien, a descendant of Brian Boru. From this alliance come the Burkes of Limerick and Tipperary and the Yorkist Kings of England. Her Majesty the Queen is thus herself a descendant.
