Early Mozart Opera
\V HEN Mozart was only 19 he wrote an opera in honour of the visit to the Salzburg Court of the Archduke Maximilian, the youngest son of the Empress Maria Theresa. Last year a concert version’ of this work, I] Ré Pastore, was broadcast in the BBC Third Programme as one of four special concerts which each contained a _ lesserknown Mozart opera. A transcription of
the broadcast is now going the rounds of National stations of the NZBS, and will be heard from 2YC at 8.30 p.m. this’ Sunday (May 17), and from 3YC at 8.46 p.m. on Saturday; May 23. The libretto of Il Reé
Pastore, by Metastasio, is about the campaign of Alexander the Great to free Sidon of its cruel ruler. It tells how in the chaos two pairs of lovers become separated only to be reunited by Alexander’s justice and their own untiring loyalty. For the most part the work consists of elaborate arias designed like vocal concertos. Two of them also have important instrumental solos. The London Mozart Players conducted by Harry Blech will be heard in the programme, and the soloists will include Margaret Ritchie (soprano) and Max Worthley (tenor). :
