Brilliant Reading
"O my mind, one of the most pleasant developments in the programme from 4YC during the last year has been the notable increase in the poetry broadcast. Not only do we have regular sessions of recent New Zealand poetry, but from time to time anthologies appear, as well as readings from the works of individual poets; and sensitive readers do much to free poetry from the bondage of the printed word. Yet even among all this wealth, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, broadcast in its entirety from 4YC recently, stood out. Possibly because of its length this poem is, outside the schoolroom, something of a rarity, and its total effect was overwhelming. The reading was brilliantly done by James Grout, a member of the | Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Com- | pany, and was all the better for being» allowed to stand alone without commentary.
