MOUNTAINEERS REMEMBERED

THEY CAME TO THE HILLS, by. Claire pagel Allen and Unwin. Enflish price, 1/-. x \ HEN an alpine scholar writes with the fluency of a journalist the result is diverting. Mlle. Engel’s first book, A History of Mountaineering in the Alps, was and lively. Her second work also has these qualities. She gives pocket biographies of 17 famous characters from J. D. Forbes (1809-68) to Frank Smythe (1900-49), and her dis‘criminating research adds vigour to old stories and reveals new details of interesting lives. Most of her subjects emerge as human beings of some stature and credible dimension, Although the author, a Frenchwoman, writes in English, her prose does not suffer; rather is it infused with her native wit. The book is well produced and illustrated, and is recommended by the Book Society.
