Close to Perfection
"HE excellent series of Haydn quar- '" tets which have delighted our Fridays for some time have ‘now sadly come to an end at 4YC, with the "Seven Last Words from the Cross,"’. played superbly by the Griller Quartet. This magnificent work, with its astonishing variation within the compass of its slow movements, provided, however, a fitting climax. The commentary which prefaced each movement was unobtrusive and restrained. Beautiful music, well played and wel] presented, and one can still ask more-that the rest of the programme be suitably chosen. Even this, possibly supererogatory work, was. not omitted, for the next recordings were by the too rarely. heard counter-tenor, Alfred Deller, accompanied on _ the harpsichord, singing two songs by Purcell. This provided an appropriate bridge to the Mozart Symphony and Concerto which followed, to complete an almost perfect evening’s listening.
