AHOY THERE!

RANSPORT by water, from the earliest rafts of rushes to the express luxury liner, has been the background of countless books, plays and films, and radio talks about sailors and the sea always command a large listening public. It’s some time since 2YA’s "Children’s Session" ran a ptogramme about ships, and arrangements are now being made to present a new series of fortnightly talks, starting on May 17. The general title of the series is "Seaspray and Funnelsmoke." It will open with a relay from the signal tower on Queen’s Wharf, Wellington, and then steer a course along the miles of waterfront with a cargo of microphones and recording gear, presenting news about coastal and overseas vessels that berth at Port Nicholson. The photograph (on the right) shows Christopher Thompson, who conducts the programme, and Belinda Bell (in charge of 2YA "Children’s Session") chatting to Second Officer D. Bonner of the Nelson ferry Ngaio. Mr. Bonner, by the way, is the father of Tim Bonner, known to thousands of soldiers and tkeatregoers as a child impersonator with the Kiwi Concert Party. Christopher Thompson, an Englishman with séven years’ Merchant Navy experience, left the sea in 1947 with the rank of second mate, and came to New Zealand the following year. As a side-. line ‘he arranges music for brass bands and orchestra. He is

also a composer of church music. Belinda. Bell, who has been with the.NZBS. for the last year, describes herself as a country girl, and she is never happier than when on a job which takes her out-of-doors. ~
