BLACKMAILED
(Rank-Harold Huth) \WITH the blackmailer himself shot dead in the first few minutes by a disinterested party-dear old Mrs. Christopher (Fay Compton) — his victims spend the rest of the film working out their problems, aggravated by Mrs. Christopher’s well-meant failure to confess. In the end she admits she was wrong. The consequences of her silence are, I suppose, the point of the film. Dirk Bogarde and Joan Rice (a newcomer to films) brought out all my sympathy for wayward youth with their portrayals of a young deserter and an escaped reformatory girl, I thought the scenes of affection between them were beautifully natural; and I hated the cold, impersonal law which I felt would get them whatever happened. Others in the cast include Mai Zetterling, Robert Flemyng and Michael Gough. Though Blackmailed, which is directed by Mare Allegret, isn’t as finished a piece of film-making as one could hope for, I remained interested throughout.
