POLITICS AS FUN
THE LITTLE WORLD OF DON CAMILLO, by Giovanni Guareschi; Victor Gollancz. English price, ‘10/6. ‘THE village priest, Don Camillo, and the local Communist leader, Peppone, "somewhere in Italy," wrangle interminably in a series of episodes which rarely fail to be uproariously funny. The scales are a little weighted in favour of Don Camillo, perhaps naturally, for he has the benefit of the Lord’s direct advice. (continued on next page)
Book Reviews (continued {rom previous page)
Guareschi has that unusual quality in @ satirist, an entire lack of indignation. Italy’s post-war troubles may not be as bad as they seem if they can so readily be turned into knockabout comedy. And there is at least one thoroughly lighthearted Italian who can delight us as hugely as he has, apparently, delighted
his fellow-countrymen. _
