LOVE AND DUTY

LAUGH OR CRY, by Mary Crawford; Jonathan Cape; English price, 12/6. A WOMAN with a grown-up daughter ‘and a difficult husband finds herself interested in a man whose own marriage has been unsuccessful. The situation which follows, a conflict between love and duty, is not new; but the characters are interesting, and Mary Crawford handles them with tact and delicacy. There is, perhaps, a suggestion now and then that the attachment which could have ended two marriages is a little too tepid, so that no great surprise is felt when the final decision is made. And the narrator’s sudden change of feeling towards her husband, although comforting, is psychologically improbable. Nevertheless, the novel has many good moments, and the writing throughout is restrained and civilised.
