FUN FOR THE HOLIDAYS

OLIDAY broadcasts for school children, which were tried out from 2YA a year ago and extended to all YA stations last May, will be heard from all YA stations, 2YZ and 3YZ, during the holidays, starting next Monday, August 20. Each broadcast will last half an hour, starting at approximately 9.4 a.m. daily from Monday to Friday. The main features will be heard from all stations. "Give us plenty of stories with adventure in them, plenty of quizzes and a few interesting talks on subjects like nature study and_ sport," Wellington school children said when NZBS Broad-

casts to Schools asked them, before the last term holidays, what sort of programmes they would like to hear. This group has been taken as a sample of New Zealand school. children. Children’s comments later showed that the programmes were a great success.

The programmes which will start next Monday aim to please all primary school children and even those too young to go to school. There will be plenty of stories. Young listeners will hear more about life in Mrs. Giraffe’s Jungle School, written by F. L. Combs and told by Frederick Farley and Desmond Locke; and Amabel Williams-Ellis will tell more Jamaican, English and Welsh folk tales. Older children will hear stories from Mark Twain and R. L. Stevenson, Baron Munchausen and the Greek tale of Philemon and Baucis. Of special interest to boys will be an exclusive coaching talk on cricket by Bert Sutcliffe. John Stannage will talk. about his flights with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in the Southern Cross, and Crosbie Morrison will be heard in nature talks. A Canadian’s tour of the Tower of London with a group of English children will also be broadcast. With the School Broadcasts singing class and pupils of Wadestown School, Lesley Coleman will conduct a community sing, and another musical programme is called Fun with Music. Books will be reviewed from each station, and there will be quiz sessions and hints on ways in which odd spare moments can be spent."If the programmes are as well received as those broadcast in May we'll be more than happy," Arnold Roseveare of Broadcasts to Schools told The Listener. "We've tried to present entertainment of worthwhile standard. If the children are happy about the result I think we've done what we set out to do."
