PACIFIC NORTH-WEST

OF MEN AND MOUNTAINS, by William re" Douglas; Victor Gollancz, English price, ‘THE mountains of Washington and Oregon are the author’s playground and his descriptions of the country are good, though they do not compensate for the lack of illustrations in the book. For the most part the narrative is autobiographical and traces the development of the author as mountaineer and sportsman from the time when as a child he overcame the handicap of an attack of infantile paralysis. As a lawyer and a judge Mr, Douglas is over-fond of the sententious, but there is much sincerity and humanity in his observations, and he is at his best in describing the history of the district and the lives of animals and men in the ranges. Mountaineers will find his adventures rather tame, but for the student of regional wild life, campers and fishermen the book has much to offer.
