The SHELL' NEWS COLUMN TORONTO GOES UNDERGROUND Toronto has steadily grown into a big city and wichin ics 35 square miles live nearly three-quarters of 4 million People: A further quarter oi miliion live in the surrounding suburbs. There is only one main north-south screec; Yonge Street; seven miles long, and since the city 5 business districc is situated in one relatively small area at one end; a considerable proportion of the people musc use the road al- most every day. Moreover, Yonge Street; which was first laid ouc in the 1790'$, is narrow, and the scream of cars and street cars is often brought {0 4 standstill: The Toronto Trans- portation Commission has found ic next to impossible to maintain regular services and adequate speeds: The Commission made an exhaustive study of the sicuation, and in 1946 4 Plan to construct an underground railway system was approved. Ic was estimated that the scheme would cost 830,000,000, but rising produc- tion costs since 1946 have added 15 per cent. to this estimate. The method of construction being used is known as cut and cover The roadway is excavated 4 block at 2 time to a depth of about 18 feet. A temporary deck is placed over che excavation and normal street traffic is resumed Shell is supplying all the gasoline, diesel fuel;, lubricants and other pet- roleum products necessary for the project.
