At 17 he ‘first conducted a professional orchestra and by 1880 he had "become bandmaster of the U.S. Marine Corps -a position he held until 1892 when he organised his own concert, band, Before his death on March 6, 1932, his compositions had included ten operattas, i} over 100 marches and more than 50 songs. Some of his famous marches will be included in a programme to be broadcast "from 2ZA at 9.30 this morning. © |
