Carols by New Zealanders
ITHIN a few days of its performance : in St. Paul’s Cathedral by the University of London Choral Society, New | Zealand listeners will have the opportunity of hearing a new carol, "The Oxen," written by an Auckland composer, Doro- | thea Franchi, who is now studying at the | Royal College of Music. It will be one | of six carols by New Zealand composers | included in Carols From Far and Near, |a concert by the Auckland Lyric Har|monists Choir, conducted by Claude | Laurie and with the support of the ) Auckland Girls’ Choral Class, which will | be broadcast by 1YA on relay from the Town Hall on Thursday, December 15, beginning at 8.0 p.m, Following an exghange of urgent cables music for "The | Oxen" was airmailed to Auckland immediately the first copies had left the ) | publishers, The other New Zealand carols are "Gabriel’s Message," "Carol |for St. Stephen’s Day," and "O Hark | the Bells," all by Tracy Moresby, "One | Night I Dreamt of Heaven," by J. H. | Rudall, and "Because," by L. N. Wathina: The programme will open and close with groups of English carols and will include others from Italy, Holland, | Austria, Germany, Poland, France, and
the United States of America. The accompanists will be Moira Fenton (violin), Erie Craig (violin), Victor Mandel (viola), Margaret Pilcher (’cello), and Eric Girvarr (bass).
