"Georgian Magazine"
[-OOTPADS, highwaymen, pickpockets ‘and other criminals rub shoulders with kings, princes and dandies in Georgian Magazine, a historical feature from the NZBS Production studios, which will be heard shortly from the main National stations. There are between 30 and 40 players (playing about 140 different parts) in the cast of this production, which depicts life in England between 1714 and 1830. Georgian Magazine, written by an English playwright, Dick Cross, has already been performed over the air by the BBC. It is in three parts, each of which takes just on an hour to present. Part One, covering the period from 1714 to 1756, introduces Bartholomew Fair, which was held in West Smithfield, London, on St. Bartholomew’s Day between 1133 and 1855; the South Seas Bubble, Jack Sheppard (the famous footpad), The Beggar's Opera, Sir Robert Walpole, Beau Nash, the Dandy of Bath, and the war with France. Part Two (1756 to 1793) touches on the press gangs, The School for Scandal, William Pitt the Elder, Dr. Graham’s Temple of Health, Vauxhall Gardens, and the Napcleonic War; and Part Three (1793 to 1830) deals with Sheridan and Mrs. Siddons at Drury Lane, with the In- vasion Scare, the funeral of Lord Nelson, the Peninsular War, Beau Brummell (the bon-vivant whose tongue was
pe ne nn ne ee nnn en nn a es end too sharp for his patron, the Prince of Wales), the machine-wreckers, and George IV himself. The programmes | contain several musical insets (composed by Bessie Pollard) for voice, harpsichord, and violin in the style of the period and used as solos, duets and trios.
