Ihe SHELL' NEWS COLUMN The Cunard White Star liner "Caronia 34,000 tons gross, largest passenger ship to be built in the world since the end of the war, made her maiden voyage to New York via Cherbourg on January Ath: She was supplied with [0,500 gallons of Shell Turbo Oil (B.C.9) and six other Shell grades: In design the "Caronia combines the massive proportions of an Atlantic liner with the grace of a cruising yacht: The vessel is powered by 3 stage Brown-Parsons steam turbines driving twin screws and having 2 total output of 30,000 h.p. Her 4 turbo generator sets have an output of 4 400 kw sufficient to light a town the size of Dunedin. The extensive air conditioning plant is responsible for quite a large machin- ery installation including refrigera- tors, compressors; pumps and fans. The amount of plant required to supply food and to provide other services for the passengers and crew is also considerable: The laundry and bakery alone contains about twenty machines Eleven express liits are installed in the linera The oil medium, by means of which the water-tight doors are operated mechanically, has been given special consideration by Shell as has the grease used on the lifeboat davits.
