‘U.S. Variety Programmes on the Air
O give publicity to the various aspects of rehabilitation for ex-Ser-vicemen and ex-Servicewomen in New Zealand, the Commercial Division of the NZBS has secured a-series of programmes of musical and comedy items by top-flight American artists. The series was made available by the Veterans’ Administration of the U.S., the American Federation of Radio Artists
and the American Federation of Musicians. All told there are 13 programmes which will go under the title of Halle Kiwis and they are being scheduled by the five Commercial stations at 7,0 p.m. on Wednesdays and 7.30 p.m. on Saturdays. Some items in the series have already been heard from one or two stations, but the remainder of the listening schedule is as follows:George Burns and Gracie Allen, 2ZB, July 6; 3ZB, July 13; @ZB, July 20; and 2ZA, July 27. STARTING at 3.30 p.m. this Sunday, July 3, Station 1ZB will present a series of Sunday afternoon programmes called Words and Music of Shakespeare. Many famous actors and actresses have made recordings of speeches from Shakespeare’s plays, including Henry Ainley, John Barrymore, John Gielgud, Sybil Thorndike, Laurence Olivier, Otis Skinner, Cornelia Skinner, Judith Anderson and Forbes Robertson, And among the great composers who found inspiration in Shakespeare were Tchaikovski, Berlioz, Mendelssohn and Verdi. ; * * * T 10.30 a.m. this Sunday, 1ZB’s Sunday Morning Spotlight will feature the English soprano Gwen Catley, who is rated highly among present-day British singers, She is heard frequently from the BBC, in such shows as ITMA, and Much-Binding-in-the Marsh, and has made’ several operatic recordings with Webster Booth, who, with his wife, Anne Ziegler, recently toured New Zealand, * x er ~ ‘THE subject for discussion by the Citi- ~" zens’ Forum at 1ZB on Sunday, July 10, at 7.0 p.m., will be "Is Worker Control a Desirable Development in Industry"? The evening’s panel will consist of H. Lambert (manufacturing company manager and importer), H. D. McAven (Auckland trade unionist) and Clifton Lewis (managing director of an~ Auckland manufacturing concern). The chairman will be Rod Talbot.
