HE part played by women in the tripartite discussions which are so regular a feature of life with either 2ZB or 2YA deserves special mention this week, I feel, for the cheerful and always gentle rationality which characterised the performances of both Mrs. Macaskill (in 2ZB’s Citizens’. Forum ‘Is the Family Still the Basic Unit of Social
Life?") and Mrs. Sylvia Smith in Monday night’s 2YA "Are We a Classless Society?" Both had voices that by implication deprecated all that was sweeping and _ irrational in the asseverations
of the male members of the panel. And it seemed to me that the men by contrast went in for much more uncompromising arguments than is usual in these discussions. Mr. Ferguson (shame on him for a Child Welfare Officer!) was heard to remark that he couldn't imagine anything more deadly than spending from 30 to 40 years sitting in front of the same fireplace every evening with the same partner, and also quoted a psychologist as saying that the family was "economically wasteful and socially harmful." Mrs. Smith (ably abetted by Mr. Somerset) had an even harder nut to crack in Mr. Napier, who was anxious to steer the discussion into a consideration of Exploiters and Exploited. In both cases I felt the day was saved for the affirmative by the sweet but relentless rationality of the representatives of the illogical sex,
