Ie SHELL' NEWS COLUMN The latest addition to the Shell Fleet will make marine history. For some years Shell have been experimenting wich various types of oil fuel and different engines in their tankers. A new ship jusc launched, the Auris is the most revolutionary ship of its nature yet to appear; and marine experts all over the world are watch- ing its progress wich great interest: There is an increased demand every- where for the more refined cypes of petroleum products, owing to the increase in motor transportation; the greater use of aircraft, che mechan- isation of farming; and So on. The marine diesel engine types; therefore, tend to be in short supply, and So the "Auris 7 will use a new type of oil turbine engine which consumes low grade fuel oil-the first of its kind de- signed for marine propulsion. Buc the experiment goes further, for Auris will also have diesel electric engines; one of which will be made to use ordinary boiler fuel: No risk, how- ever, is taken should these experi- mental engines fail, because the ship will be equipped with other diesel engines operating in the normal manner_ Before the oil turbine is installed in "Auris an extensive programme of tests will be carried out on shore, to make sure that everything goes smoothly once this tanker uses the engine at sea. As a result, it is possible that this latest 'Shell tanker may be the means of introducing a new driving force into ships all over the world, which will not only prove more efficient than existing methods but will also be much cheaper to operate because its fuel costs less.
