Ihe SHELL' NEWS GOLUMN Folk in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, are very pleased wich their new res- ervoir: Ic supplies them with 5} million extra gallons of water a day: The Churchill Water Scheme was started in 1940, but the war held ic uP: In 1945 work was resumed, and now che job is finished: Ic has a catchment area of 132 square miles between the Tzitzikama Moun- tains and the Zuur Annays Hills. And into storage every day flow an average of between 20 and 30 million gallons of water. There are many unusual features about the Churchill Dam, one being that full allowance has been made for ics enlargement should this ever become necessary The water is spec- ially treated with a new anti-corrosive chemical, and from the filtration plant is led by gravitation for 77 miles in pipes across rugged territory through two solid rock tunnels, and, in one place, over the Gamtoos River on a 417 ft. suspension bridge: Many construction firms shared In this magnificent achievement, and Shell are proud to have supplied nearly all the fuel and lubricating oil for the great fleet of modern equip- ment used on the job over 157,000 gallons during the last two years of work: Shell are playing their part in the day-to-day operation of the plant too, for the Power Station is using Shell Fuel and Oil in its two 80 h.p: Diesel Engines: E5.9 Another in the Series The SHELL COMPANY OF NZ: LTD (Incorporated in England)
